    So does political leaning.

With like 15 minutes of training a random person can tell your political leaning with over 80% accuracy off a brain MRI

Which is just fucking insanely high in a country where 33% don’t vote.

There’s a feedback loop with conservatives and the amygdala.

And progressives policy and the prefrontal cortex.

Which is why Republicans eliminating all the parts of public education that works the prefrontal correct 30 years ago isn’t a problem we can fix overnight.

Pretty sure you commented before I realized and edited in the bit about an MRI…

But the training is just pointing at those two areas and saying when the amygdala is larger than average, it’s a conservative. And when the prefrontal cortex is larger, they’re progressive.

But like OP is saying, the brain retains plasticity well into old age and can adapt and change.

My favorite example is the area responsible for navigation drastically increases before studying begins for the London Taxi test and after certification. Even for the oldest drivers in their 50s and 60s.

When applied to politics it means no one is written off for good. It takes work, but people can change. For the better but also for the worse.

Assuming this is true, as a progressive with worthless executive function and a raging anxiety disorder, I feel like I may be an exception.

Oversimplified, this is the problem: conservatives use tactics that target fear/uncertainty/doubt/… which are all “survival mechanisms” present in ALL brains (not even just mammalian). Progressives rely on actual facts and peer review, but you need to have a developed prefrontal cortex in order to think critically and logically. This is not something you’re innately born with FYI; it’s a skill that needs development and training, just like you would need to develop muscles in order to become an athlete.

The problem is that the first mechanism (amygdala) kicks in before the rational part of the brain does. It’s feelings vs. thoughts. It takes conscious effort and knowledge of this mechanism to escape back into your “logical self” and then argue from reason and facts. The opposite requires none of this. Just an emotional reaction without a consistent follow-through. These people don’t escape the emotional part of their psyche to then rationally overthink the facts; they BEGIN with their conclusion and will follow emotional cues to that end, and then rationalize their decision afterwards.

You can’t possibly reason someone out of a position they arrived at without using reason to begin with.

Trauma physically affects your brain, it restructures it in ways that are physically measurable. This is a scary thought, as it feels like a permanent scar on your very being. But healing from trauma also physically affects your brain, so you shouldn’t get too down because of it!

Absolutely. I’m living proof. You have to work for it, though. Be willing to leave unhealthy thinking patterns and behaviors… And friends who are more invested in remaining the victim than healing.

My Trauma will probably never go away. For a while I wasted my time with therapists, but I don’t bother with that anymore.
