Furryosa just got her first confirmed kill a couple weeks ago. I heard the squeaking for like ten seconds then her proudly strutting through the living room. She wouldn’t let me take it away until the next morning.
My cat does the same thing every time he finds a mouse, unless we interrupt him before he can kill it, then he gets quite cross with us.
He usually doesn’t play with them, so if we get to it in time, it’s often uninjured and we try to catch and release outside. If it’s hurt, we give it a quick end so it’s not suffering

How do you give it a quick end? Our guy is a masochist and likes to watch them suffer.
usually, put it in a bag and hit it over the head with something… sounds violent, but it’s faster than what the cat wants to do at least.
Ouch… I guess you’re right, but that would be tough for me to do (and then hypocritically eat a chicken sandwich)
