I’m not as against these “sad narratives” as you are, but I still think that this one just doesn’t make much sense. Photons hit random planets and stuff all of the time, so arguably hitting a living sentient being is one of the coolest things that could happen to a photon.

Yeah, the point of the joke is that crop rotation has been practiced for literally thousands of years. It was an agricultural invention which gave ancient cultures significantly higher crop yields, enabling a huge number of societal, cultural and scientific developments. The joke is based on the idea that before crop rotation was discovered, some people might have considered it a silly idea, delaying the developments enabled by the significantly increased crop yields.

I’ve literally never seen a check in my life, and I’ve been around since the late 80s.

Technically, it is a fine format. The main issue is that it hasn’t been widely implemented in software which make use of images, and so you often need to convert it into other formats when you want to make use of it, which is a pain in the ass.

I can’t help but wince whenever I see someone hold in a sneeze. It gives me physical discomfort.

That’s the main reason I didn’t even consider them. “Proton(mail)” just sounds more professional when used in actually important contexts and is easier for people to get right.

In general, I’ve noticed that a lot of privacy focused software, particularly FOSS, are really bad at choosing names which make people want to use them. They tend to have names which might appeal to some crypto-nerds, but which make them sound just weird or questionable or niche to the average user. Like (the precursor to) Signal the messaging app used to be called TextSecure. There’s no way I would’ve gotten my parents and siblings to use something called TextSecure. The name just sounds so geeky and niche.
