  • Yes, actually, I betrayed the client by preparing lots of paperwork and examples of the system working so when they went to court they would actually have to defend their position.

It didn’t help me not get laid off though because losing 4 months of payroll in a chargeback is pretty brutal for a company’s books.

And that company never came back from it. A subdivision of the company, survived, but the company lost its building, and most of its employees during the bankruptcy and restructuring. And it happened right before Christmas, so the entire company got laid off for the holidays, it was a lot of fun /s. Fuck predatory self-help companies…

Yes, Nedry owned his IT company, but Hammond was withholding Nedry’s final paycheck until debugging was done. Which had already gone over budget due to feature creep, so Nedry was doing it himself because he didn’t have money to pay his people because Hammond wouldn’t give him the money they agreed on. Hence why Nedry was looking to make some side money, he’s literally doing all that debugging and final system fixes for free on the promise that he won’t be screwed again by Hammond. IIRC anyway, its been like 30 years since I read the book… And a lot of my perspective changed as I got older and I got more experience in the industry. As a kid, I thought you took the job you should do the job, but as an adult I understand a lot better the dynamics of the situation and while I still think if you took the job you should do the job, I completely understand the feeling of getting Fucked by someone who would rather throw money at lawyers than just pay what they agreed on.

I have been in his position, and while I didn’t betray the client and get killed, I really understand his mindset and “Fuck-it” attitude. Hammond is wealthy and using his position and power to spare as much expense as possible and step on as many contractors as possible. Kind of like an Orange Cheeto I know of. I had a company I work for that had to file bankruptcy because a half-billion dollar a year company hired us then charged back their initial payment and refused to issue final payment unless we did a ton of extra work, and when we did that, they just said “thanks” and vanished. Apparently American Express lets you contest a payment 6-12 months after it was issued and their stance is if you want your money you should sue.

Doesn’t matter what the DM rolls, beholders eye petrification is a DC only ability, it always hits, its up to the player’s DEX Save to resist the effect.

    1. Petrification Ray. The targeted creature must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature begins to turn to stone and is restrained. It must repeat the saving throw at the end of its next turn. On a success, the effect ends. On a failure, the creature is petrified until freed by the greater restoration spell or other magic.

  • It also forces Russia into a defensive war where they have already committed all their forces for an Offensive war. This will force Russia to either give up parts of Russia, or withdraw troops from Ukraine to retake parts of Russia. And also I’ve seen reports that Ukraine is having to slow progress because of processing surrendering Russian soldiers.

I figure once Russia withdraws troops from Ukraine to reinforce itself, Ukraine will likely pull back and swoop in and take their territory back.

Then we’ll see where this goes, either Putin will withdraw and try to get peace, or he’ll act like a cornered animal, and will get more unpredictable and erratic. There is always the chance that Ukraine will refuse peace talks and just keep marching on Moscow too. Either way, by pushing into Russia they are changing the dynamic of the war drastically and can finally put Russia on the defensive without worrying about losing support from NATO allies.

  • Gmail wasn’t even the first, Hotmail, Yahoo mail, there were tons of free email offerings, even sites that would host your whole website for free like geocities. Gmail came into the market when 3rd party email being free was already well established. They just followed an Apple style of development, taking something that already exists and made a better version of it. Also back then their motto was still “Don’t Be Evil” and they mostly still kept to it, so they used that goodwill and the better user experience to grow it at a massive rate. And for the most part, its still the best experience for email for many cases.

  • If you’ve ever been forced to use Teams you must already know they scraped the bottom of their talent barrel for the team that works on it… The software is shit, riddled with bugs to the point where at one point I used to only be able to use teams on my browser because the desktop app just decided to never let me access the text chat, and the browser version I would load it would be a white screen and I would have to refresh 3 times for it to load. But at least it worked after those 3 refreshes. And it was exactly 3 refreshes every single time, never 2, never 4, and 5 was right out. It was always without fail 3 refreshes. Whether loading from Firefox, Chrome, or Edge. Fortunately we don’t have too many meetings with people using Teams these days, so I haven’t had to use it in a while, but its easily in my top 5 worst software I’ve been forced to deal with. Maybe Top 3. But its still miles behind Magento. Fuck Magento, just thinking of it right now gets my blood pumping and I refused to work with it ever again about 10 years ago… Fuck Magento. Teams is at least a distant 2nd or 3rd to that. Absolute crap.
