  • Seems like a case where a particular claim of a select group was generalised over a supergroup by way of being the subject of memes that ran away with the stereotype.

It’s like that one fraud falsifying studies about a specific type of vaccines in an attempt to sell his own, only for people to latch on to the “vaccine bad” part of the story without limit, nuance or critical examination.

Does anyone still know where the original “just friends” claim stems from, in which context, supported by which arguments, what refutations have been offered since and just how widespread among archaeologists it is today?

  • I appreciate that you took the time to supply the nuances I omitted. While there is value in a positive framing, it’s important to acknowledge potential struggles as well. We can’t effectively tackle issues if we’re not aware of them.

In any case, while I’m not qualified to help you with your difficulties, I hope you find - or have found - a way to work on overcoming them. Dealing with insecurities, from my own experience, can be a tough process, further amplified by setbacks and a lack of perceived progress. But if you persevere, even if you might not feel that you have improved much, you may find yourself looking back at a time when it was worse and, by contrast, see the progress you’ve made. May that hope, that your future self will look back and be proud of your hard work, give you the strength to keep going.

  • Well, you sound like a team player. You place the common good (fun together) higher than individual ambitions (or maybe place your own worth very low, I can’t tell from one sentence, but the outcome is the same).

Saying deliberately sounds like it’s not just a thing that you find yourself doing again and again, but a conscious choice. That suggests there was a choice to make; that the option of playing a self-centered character was something you were actively aware of, but were sufficiently repulsed by it to make a point of being better than those people.

I think you’re a nice person, empathetic, while not so entirely innocent as to not even consider the possibility, still principled and caring enough to actively defy it.

I think you’re a net good for this world.

  • Is that frequency something you can control or measure? Do you agree on a shared “let’s meet” frequency you set it to, and if the other happens to have it set to that as well, you end up meeting? Or is it more of a random chance thing, like running into each other in places you both frequent at coincidentally matching times and deciding it must be the bracelets’ doing?

Or am I falling for a joke?

  • I have this nasty habit of taking jokes - even ones I recognise as such - and starting a serious line of thought from that. I know you’re joking because that’s an excessive amount of effort for sharing a joke, but in the process of evaluating that, my brain has latched on to the question of “Could that be serious? How would that play out?”, started analysing and I don’t know how to make it stop doing that.

  • Given that all those rips didn’t add anything to the original work, I’d argue they don’t strictly require credit. They’re not really derivative works, but rather reproductions of the original.

I can see the logic behind crediting “this is where I got it from” as proximate source in addition to naming the ultimate source. In academic contexts, it’s certainly important to specify where you quoted someone from to make your sources transparent in addition to naming the original source. This isn’t an academic context, however, so I wouldn’t consider it warranted.

It’s an interesting consideration, to be sure.

  • Isn’t that the “how dare you leave this in the tags” phenomenon where OP will hide some gem in the tags for someone else to spot and call out? I was under the impression that it’s often funnier that way, like a comedic duo where one party sets up the joke the other delivers.

So by quoting what was hidden, you became the second member of the impromptu comedic duo. You might not strictly deserve credit for writing it, but you helped deliver it.

  • Pretty sure hermit crabs (like most animals) aren’t renting. The previous owner of that shell has abandoned it, so they’d be squatters or, lacking any concept of private property, simply inhabitants. Point is they wouldn’t need any owner to return security deposits they never made.

Moving furniture and personal belongings is a good point though, they don’t have any of that. Most houses aren’t too mobile either. Clothes just fit better.

  • That’s something that helped me cope with a lot of things: realising I am not alone. I’ve also made it a point of trying to share that same comfort with others. If you struggle to get up, not because you’re tired but because your brain refuses to comply, because Why bother? What even is the point of getting up?, know that someone somewhere is fighting that same struggle right now.
Someone else just won it (for today, at least), and picked themselves up, because doing something at all is better than letting defeatism and apathy paralyse you. You can do the same. You can muster the strength, and by that strength, may set an example for someone else. They don’t need to know you, just the thought that you exist, that you share their struggle, that you overcame it and they can too.

Then you ought to have someone remove him nonviolently, just to make sure he’s not a threat. Maybe send a cop up there to instruct him to get down?

Cop is threatened with a gun

Okay at that point you’d expect a radio call to go out “Person on X roof just threatened a Law Enforcement officer with a gun” which I’d consider license to fire.
