  • Number 1) find the fuse that controls the modem and pull it. Without this your car can only report when the service techs hook it up to their diagnostics, and what is reported there versus what reports on the regular from the modem is a huge difference. You lose a lot of convenience this way, but that’s to be expected. CarPlay and auto give you a lot of that convenience back, but now you’re giving a lot of that same data to Apple and Google, even if all you think you’re doing is projecting maps from your phone to your infotainment. Do you trust them? You can use Bluetooth audio in most cars without using CarPlay or auto, that should be safe. Stick to maps on your phone if you don’t want Google or Apple getting your driving data.

  • Getting a job is a multi stage battle. Options 1, 2, and 3.5 won’t get you past the first stage, the inept HR screener. Doesn’t matter if it’s an entry level job, your resume looks worse to them than anyone with any professional experience. Option 3 kinda works for it, but even better would be an internship or two. That looks like real experience to the HR monkeys. Once you slay them, now you’re to the manager resume screen. This is where options 1 and 2, and maybe 3.5 can help. Score an interview with them, then it’s up to your shining personality to get you the rest of the way.

Every job in the industry has hundreds of applicants these days. It’s no longer enough that your resume meets the requirements, it’s got to actually compete. Since most jobs allow remote these days, it’s got to compete on a national or even international scale. Apply to on-site or hybrid roles to limit the market of competition. Make sure your resume screams that you’re better than the rest.

    Good luck!

  • I found that few people have the imagination to play both sides of their characters. They always try to be human mode or fairy mode, but that’s not how it works and it’s really hard to always think of your characters as being and doing both simultaneously. It’s a great game for the imaginative, but probably hell for a lot of other players. It does lend itself to LARP really well though. We did a huge live action game for a few summers with like 40 people and 3 GMs, it was tons of fun.

  • Yesterday I would have argued that with the rails framework Ruby is a great way to rapidly develop a scalable application. Today I started having an intermittent failure in one of my API instances and when searching about it the only thing I could find was one obscure blogpost that boiled down to “yeah sometimes Ruby Ave active record just screws up the character set off a string” exact same string, different results. Excuse me Ruby? How the fuck can you sometimes screw up a character set? There should be no sometimes to any thing here.

If you want an actual dumb car that’s reliable, I don’t think anything beats a TJ series Jeep wrangler. Not good gas mileage, but the I6 engine in them is fantastic and it’s still relatively easy to get parts for them despite being 20 years old. You can add an after market head unit for CarPlay out android auto.

If you really do go new, you can disable the cellular radio. It’ll cost you a lot of convenience features, and you won’t get updates. But no cell radio, no ability for it to give your data to the mothership.
