As an example of this, I believe SexyCyborg got in trouble for reporting on leaks via people’s 3rd party Chinese language keyboards. So her theory is that the keyboard apps people had installed leaked data when Hong Kong protesters were communicating with the press, rather than the actual Signal app. But… as stated above, people have to take responsibility for their device and in this case, they had chosen to install apps with leak issues into the communication process.

Can’t answer to Tor—haven’t even tried it in years, but I know on Windows, Firefox totally ignores the whole “reopen tabs on restart” pref if you close the last window via the red X in the corner. You have to use control-shift-Q or show menus and select File->Quit if you’re going to quit it in a way it understands as requesting you to reopen the tabs again next launch.
BitWarden provides some encrypted storage on their paid tiers. I think it’s very small, like 1GB, but it’s E2E.
Apple iCloud storage is actually E2E too if you turn on Advanced Data Protection. (Note that not all iCloud features are E2E, like email, for example.) And the price is pretty comparable too. Naturally this works a lot better if you’re on a Mac, but just FYI.
That’s how you know the privacy protections are working. Meta won’t let you in if they can’t identify you well enough to sell your data.
So obviously not to everyone’s taste but if you have access to iCloud+ email, your mail isn’t scanned for sale (as per their US privacy agreement anyway), you get randomized email addresses available to give to places that you think might be spammy and you can link a domain to your account, although you’re only allowed 3 email boxes per user in your family per domain. Works well for me so far. Mind you because of photo storage size and devices backups I’m up to $3/ month from the original $1/month when I started.
Plus with Advanced Data Protection a lot of iCloud info is E2E encrypted. (Not email tho.)
Hahaha, yeah I only buy books that I know I will be rereading down the line, because otherwise the foundations of my house would crumble under the weight.
My library allows requesting new books 3 months before they come out, so I usually try and be the guy requesting it and getting the first hold on it that way…
If you want to read something slightly closer to “normal” SF by him, The Embassy is good. Although my absolute favorite is still The City and The City, which is all about social mores and to a degree, castes.
They’re great! Especially Sundiver and The Uplift War. EDIT: should have added they are somewhat stand-alone, although you do manage to learn a little bit more about the overall arc of the plot from each book if you move through them in order.
Sort of? Almost? It provides a lot of motivation for one of the main characters IIRC. Honestly might be just as well off watching the NF show haha.
So the first 100+ pages was an excruciating slog but after that he finally gets to the real story. Which was cool and fascinating but he completely effed it up in book 2 and I didn’t even make it 100 pages into book 3 before seeing it was more bogusness. Still, I would kinda recommend Book 1 if you can make it through the freaking Chinese revolution part at the start.
I’m pretty much against it because I feel like it’s an opportunity to have to explain which BSG is actually the good one of them all to everyone you ever talk to about it. (Also, way way too soon for another reboot!)
Doesn’t contain The Arrival either. Or Moon, or Alien or Twelve Monkeys… Basically there are a lot of more deserving candidates then Gravity, Ad Astra and Sunshine.
Gravity is not bad IMHO, but it lost its hard sci fi cred ::: spoiler with the Sixth Sense shenanigans ::: .
Doesn’t contain Moon, 12 Monkeys, The Arrival, Alien, District 9… there are quite a few movies I would out ahead of Ad Astra and Sunshine at the very least. And possibly Gravity and Solaris too. Also, listing 2001 in 15th place???
Some are better than others, but they’re all fairly high quality? I’ve definitely read worse than even the ones I’m not super thrilled about, so I’d say it’s worth reading them all if you have the time.

Oh man, I feel you. Worst thing for my last cat was he had to get radiation therapy for his hyperthyroidism. So he had never been away from home overnight and they have to keep them like 4 days until the radiation is out of their system enough to come home BUT they say no cuddling or sleeping next to them for another 3 days. He was SO SAD when I would push him away to the other side of the couch and when I had to lock him out of the bedroom for the first time ever.

But yeah, she has been super quiet since they “clipped her wings”. But she said she would be too. Censorship sucks and I can’t believe we let an entire country get away with it and still did business with them the whole time.
