5·2 years agoI’ve also been on the beta. Overall Android doesn’t seem to have really change though, aside from maybe better battery life and minor aesthetic changes.

7·2 years agoA week ago I got my phone screen repaired. The best current workaround for this is to enable profile modes and enable Guest Mode. They can’t access anything else on your phone this way and can still test everything.

32·2 years agoIn computer security, you always have to consider both physical and digital security. They go hand in hand.
You can put as many passwords on a computer as you want but as soon as you have local access to a computer or storage device it’s game over.
Check out the 8 security domains in relation to computer security.

52·2 years agoIf you yank out an SD card on it from a phone that was forgotten behind:
- You now have access to all of the potentially unencrypted files on it
- Threat actors can replace trusted files with malicious ones to exploit potential vulnerabilities in applications running on the Android device
- In 5 seconds you’ve walked away with it, as opposed to a laptop which requires you to physically unscrew it
If you have a phone without an SD card they only have access to the USB port, which is locked with software and in some cases hardware. Removing the SD card slot is one less attack vector, it will make the device more secure one way or another.
Leaving your laptop around someone can also yank the SSD. Modern laptop operating systems generally have the option to encrypt their storage devices.
You can encrypt microSD cards but you must do file transfers through the phone itself through USB which I guess is no different than having an encrypted drive on a laptop. I haven’t looked into how modern SD encryption works on Android.

It’s been well documented. They can also use them to place malicious files on and potentially gain access to the phone by having the Android phone read them and run malicious code.

66·2 years agoYes, temperature sensor! I couldn’t tell you why, but maybe they have some super secret feature planned.
No SD slot no. Modern smartphones don’t have them anymore since they are a security risk.

Google Pixel@lemmy.world•Google says it can’t fix Pixel Watches, please just buy a new one | With no official repair program and no parts, broken Pixel Watches are just e-waste.English
3·2 years agoIt’s quite easy to remove the screen on a Pixel Watch actually.
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Google+Pixel+Watch+Screen+Replacement/160350#s337082
It’s not that it was designed in a specific way that just so happened to make it unrepairable, it’s just that Google decided they will not offer repair parts.

Google Pixel@lemmy.world•Google misses the deadline to manufacture TSMC-based SoC for the Pixel 9, may not see till Pixel 10English
10·2 years agoAs a Pixel 7 Pro user, I love my phone, but can’t help but to want a more efficient chip with higher expectations of the battery life a TSMC chip would have.
I originally planned on getting a Pixel 9 with this in mind, but it looks like the earliest we may be getting a Pixel with this chip will be in 2025 on the release of Pixel 10.
So much for sticking with odd-numbered phones!

Google Pixel@lemmy.world•My Pixel 6 Pro commited suicide this weekEnglish
101·2 years agoPixel 6 Pro was not a fantastic phone, though battery issues like that are usually caused by overheating. Prolonged use of a phone in hot conditions will cause frequent overheating and rapid degrading of the batteries. Examples of this are putting them in car dashboards in the hot sun, or charging them in the sun.

This too!

MediaTek or Qualcomm chips will be used probably, but to order cutting edge chips they’d need to order pretty high volumes to keep prices down, so the chip they order will probably be older. Though the Pixel 5 was one of my favorite phones, so if they can keep that level of speed on Android 16 then I’m all for it.
