Not everything we need. As sea levels rise and inundate aquifers with salt, and as drought followed by flood becomes the norm, the places people live will run out of water for everyday use. Causing waves of refugees, spawning wars.

We are not going to be okay. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t act. Pretending it’s going to be okay is just a foolish as pretending it isn’t real.

  • I think you’ll be very happy with the new addition. I’ve had the Forté AP for a few years now and it has been super reliable, very consistent, and has needed only the occasional cleaning.

So you know if you can get a single dose hopper for the Sette? That’s one accessory I got for the Forté and I seriously love. I use the lid as a cup for measuring beans, it pours into the hopper without dropping a single bean, and it’s large enough to hold beans even for a larger chemex setup.

  • Applying it directly to plants or mixed into potting soil has very mixed support. It’s decomposing cellulose, like any other plant, so it’s unlikely to be that bad in any application. Mostly it seems like well meaning coffee enthusiasts recommend it, while mixing grounds into compost appears to be widely recommended even by non-enthusiasts.

The thing I avoid like the plague is getting grounds down the drain. Over time they’ll clog drains, collect in pipes slowing flow, etc. and generally be a pain. So I’m careful to get as much out before rinsing as possible without going crazy. I also do not use it in soaps, because soap film plus coffee grounds in your drain is a perfect recipe for those clogged pipes.

I’ve been meaning to try using used grounds in a cooking rub- leaving them to dry and then mixing them in a spice rub or using them as the rub itself. I’d be interested to see if anybody’s tried used versus fresh grounds, and whether there’s a noticeable difference.

  • Flat out, I will never buy another item from QNAP. Ever. Their “support” is a joke, and their only fix for hardware that doesn’t work on “supported” OS due to old firmware is to return it and hope to get a new one with a new firmware that actually works. Like, WTF? And “supported” here means they have some old, janky, partially functional Linux app that ran on an Ubuntu desktop once upon a time. No headless system support for a server attached product. And really, they want you running it on a Windows desktop.

Beyond that, the physical hardware itself was super generic gear. I was unimpressed with paying a premium after friends all recommended QNAP, and I got what was basically a child’s toy that they didn’t expect a professional to be using.

As for multi-gig router, if you’re doing dynamic, addressing and masquerading then I can recommend the unified dream machine pro. The second edition is more capable, and has a faster backplane between the 10 gig land and land ports and the one gig ports. The original dream machine pro that I have does not have that feature, and it’s sorely missed.

If you need to do any complex routing, or static addressing then things get a little more wonky. Wonky. Very obviously does not expect this device to be a real router, but rather than that and masquerade gateway for a small business office. It totally works, and I’ve had mine for a few years now, but it’s just something to be aware of.

Mikrotik also makes a 10g router device, as do a couple other companies. They’ll expect you to be a bit more experienced, though. I’m not sure what your skill level is, but they are options at least.

Edit: you want an sfp+, btw. An sfp only does 1gbit, an sfp+ does 10gbit, and qsfp does 25+ gbit. https://www.black-box.eu/en-int/page/45646/Resources/technical/Black-Box-Explains/lan/SFP-vs-QSFP-What-s-the-difference
