Great space! Depending on how much rain and snow you get and if you are thinking of replacing the tile anyway, you might look at some water permeable options like these.

The teak ones especially are easy to move around if you want more or less grassy space for your pets over time.

Allowing the water to run into the ground is good for your hedge and good for the water cycle in general. And it would mean more days where you can use the space because you’re not stepping out into puddles.

I know those kind of motorized vents are used in commercial HVAC. (Here’s a white paper on a stepper motor for one https://www.portescap.com/en/newsroom/whitepapers/2021/10/customized-and-reliable-stepper-motors-for-damper-applications )

A stepper would be the easiest thing because if you know it takes 10 steps to fully open from fully closed, you could keep track of how many steps you have sent each direction in Home Assistant and be able to display the current status. 

If you want a knob on the wall that controls this, I think somewhere behind it you are still going to need a control system that translates wall switch inputs into stepping logic. Home Assistant would be able to do that easily. 

I think they are great if it’s about 40% talk and 60% socialize. The point of talks should be to stimulate a conversation that happens in the hallway. If it’s just one way content absorption, that could’ve been done remotely. 

I desperately miss the networking and socializing and the people I met and the interesting conversations that I could not have planned for. I hope eventually my company starts sending us again.
