Sure, but this is the thing that really annoys me: my state has really good eID, it just doesn’t work with the EU stuff. It works with literally every other government service, most companies, often as physical ID, for payments, etc etc

I had the exact opposite experience! I went through a lengthy process of signing up for and activating the weird nonstandard eID that most places don’t accept over the normal one I already have and use for everything, the only one they supported, only to be told I can’t use it without manually contacting the company, have them invalidate my activation and then go into some office to get manually re-activated.

Chimera Linux (not to be confused with ChimeraOS, a variant of SteamOS). It introduces itself like this:

Chimera is an independent, general-purpose, rolling-release Linux distribution developed from scratch. It utilizes a FreeBSD-based userland, musl C library and the LLVM toolchain, along with the dinit service manager. Its primary focus is correctness, consistency and simplicity, but not at the expense of feature set; its primary desktop environment is GNOME

It’s worth mentioning that it’s a Linux without GNU (though not for the sake of being that). In general I think projects like this one has a value from a ecosystem diversity perspective too, which also has become immediately apparent when Chimera Linux wasn’t hit by the two last security issues I learned about (the recent SSH regression and the xz debacle).

I’m particularly impressed with their relatively lean setup, but I haven’t had opportunity to use it yet. It’s a bit too immature for my desktop use and I’m already happy with the server I have so it makes no sense to switch.

I’m not too concerned about bears since they’re very uncommon where I live (Northern Europe), but I was thinking fibreglass or possibly some special plywood with aluminium frame. I actually did some calculations on the weight of a frame and it’s pretty ok even with steel bars, especially if they’re hollow.

I’m kind of souring on Fedora Kinoite. I generally sometimes pop in to try how Linux is doing, and I had great hopes for KDE Plasma 6 and immutable distributions for stability. However, I’ve found that many things in the UI are still wonky and broken, fonts don’t render well, and I keep running into limitations in the flatopak/containers ecosystem.

Here are a few paper cuts:

• I can’t get the launcher to do web searches despite them being available and configured, even when manually invoking the keyword
• fonts look blurry and render weirdly; all of the household macs produce ok output on the same screen so it isn’t the issue
• I really miss having consistent emacs text navigation bindings but shortcuts like C-a/C-e are already taken and remapping is difficult to get to work consistently
• I’ve been trying to compile parts of the Linux minidisc system but the dependencies aren’t available outside of a toolbox and USB isn’t available inside. I think, it’s difficult to google and I’ve time boxed trying to fix it to N hours and exhausted those, so it’s either impossible or too difficult
• for a long time Obsidian (from flatpak) couldn’t agree with the window manager to draw drop shadows and window decorations which meant that figuring out where obsidian ended and the white window underneath it began was literally impossible
• sometimes the wired USB keyboard stops working if I unplug it and doesn’t start working until I’ve plugged it in/unplugged it a few times
