The surgeon general tweeted out, “STOP WEARING MASKS” and CNN was publishing articles with all the anti-masker claims, including that they don’t work and could increase your risk of getting it instead, and people just pretend like it never happened and the anti-maskers came out of thin air.

It wasn’t just an idiotic ploy to deliberately spread misinfo to trick people into leaving masks for doctors, it was also about the government trying to cover their own ass for having sold off their emergency stockpiles for fast cash.

My impression is that Blahaj accepted the 196 lifeboat without necessarily knowing much about it. Many of us on Hexbear had experiences with it on Reddit because on the surface it seems cool, but it’s always had some strong Vaushite tendencies that we really dislike.

Taking the R-word and adding “lib” to it doesn’t make it any less offensive. And what bothers me is that those who combine “liberal” with that word are not insulting their intended targets — they’re insulting an entire group of people who have done nothing wrong, all while perpetuating a term that simply needs to go away.

It’s not just us Hexbears who find it offensive. Even if it’s used ironically, I think we can all agree that the ironic use of offensive language still has potential to cause harm and should at the very least not be above crticism.

E: I’m pro-federation and I want to soothe things over, and I think the admins of both Blahaj and Hexbear are committed to that, but it seems like this mod is intentionally trying to burn bridges. This all happened underneath a post where they publicly posted a private conversation with one of our mods for the purpose of mockery. I’ve been trying to get people to tone it down on our side, but none of our people are going to listen to calls for civility in the face of ableism. We support our neurodivergent comrades.

That would also be a reasonable approach, sure. Maybe it’d be better. But our approach hasn’t caused any problems as far as I’m aware, I’ve never seen anyone say that we didn’t have the pronouns they wanted, and I’m confident that if they did the mods would add the option for them, like what happened with doe/deer. We were just concerned about opening up an avenue of misuse, and it’s very rare that someone uses pronouns not on the list so it’s easy for the mods to accommodate when it happens.

Fair enough, but it’s just a formality and idk of anyone ever being denied. We just do it that way to prevent trolls from putting helicopter jokes in there because we hate when the trolls are boring.

It’s been like a week lol. We’re mostly happy about federation but we still have closer ties to each other than to the fediverse, even if every instance defederated with us tomorrow we’d just go back to normal.

This was a concern we had when we were discussing how to handle pronouns, and it’s the reason that we decided not to have a custom field option. Instead, our policy is that we’ll add pronouns if someone requests them and they seem to be acting in good faith. We have a couple strange ones like doe/deer, but that’s because a longtime user used them and requested them, and doe never showed any signs that doe was a troll.

What the other user said was part of our reasoning for adopting them. On the cases where we’ve had trolls come in and use them, they tend to go mask off pretty quickly and get banned, and we don’t really care if they think their owning us somehow.

If you mean people use neopronouns to make people who hate neopronouns mad, I mean I don’t know how to distinguish unless you’re a mind reader but honestly who cares. You can use whatever neopronouns you want for whatever reason you want, unless it’s mocking trans people.
