Basically some crazy fisherman caught a huge fucking whale, brought it home and ate with some local artist. The man was so impressed by the meal that while hammered off peasant wine he decided to paint this.
Eyes on its back you say, so basically women evolved from this cz they seem to somehow know things that are otherwise impossible unless they had eyes on the back of their head
