Not OP, but the answer is, it depends. If you’re using a proper (read: slightly more expensive and probably non-acrylic) yarn skein hank, then yes, it needs to be wound into a ball first, then put into the bowl. The bowl keeps your ball from rolling around everywhere.
If you’re using a cheaper type of center pull skein (no judgment!) then no, not really. But if you’re using a center pull skein, then you don’t really need the bowl. Your yarn won’t roll.

My first project was a dishcloth. Easy, fast, basic square, corner to corner, only one increase or decrease per row. Mostly just practicing the knit stitch over and over again. I did that until I had made so many that they were piling up. Then I moved to scarves, lol. To be fair, I was about 13 at the time. It was long long ago, lol.
Oh, I’m not sure. I’ve never noticed that the bowl made a difference in my tension, but I can’t afford the fancy yarn very often, so I rarely use one.
