  • Woah, I don’t want to post for that beefy of a GPU. (I am joking, if that is not clear)

Really, most games I am interested in are JRPGs, adventure games, 2D platformers, top-down action games, and other genres that work fine with rather simple graphics. A game does not need pretty visuals to be fun.

I recognize that I am in the minority and most people want 3-D graphics in their games.

  • What mod for what game are you talking about? Is the mod just writing flavor fluff or is it weaving in important information?

If it is the former, I don’t care for it. I don’t want to know that farmer John had a good crop of turnips. It is just filler fluff that does not build on the setting but simply makes it look busy for the sake of being busy.

If it is the latter, I would think that there is a risk that the AI NPC conveys information in a hard to understand or misleading way and players would have a hard time understanding what to do.

  • Nintendo is always good at supporting its systems past the end of the generation, especially portables. Based on past behavior, I expect that when the Switch 2 comes out, Nintendo is going to market the Switch as a cheap alternative for families who are uncomfortable with the new console price.

“Buy the Switch Lite, now with a lower MSRP, and start enjoying its vast library of great games. Once we release some great Switch 2 games and you are in a better financial position (or saved up), you can buy a Switch 2.”

  • It makes sense to have a final press conference about the final games for the Switch. They want customers and partners to know about major games still planned for the system,. especially if it is still going to be “current gen” during the holidays. It could be a going away party for one of the most successful video game systems.

It is possible (and even likely) that the Switch 2 will not be announced yet. I suspect that if they planned to announce the system this month, they would have said as much. This feels more like “we plan to announce in 6 months but don’t want to say as much in case plans slip”.

  • My group beat Pandemic Legacy Season 1 (amazing) and Season 2 (great for the first 11 months but the last month was broken). We got half way through Season 0 before we quit. We we started off with more powerful characters but the game was also harder and kept getting even harder from there (more loss conditions and the win condition became much harder to accomplish). We got plenty of upgrades, but very few of them were interesting and many were very situational.

I could see Pokemon Legends Z-A being the Switch swan song, one last AAA release for the giant install base. It could also be launched along side a new ultra-budget version of the Switch (like the GBA Micro and Wii Mini).

Pokemon games have come out for previous gen systems. Crystal (GB) did got its international release after the GBA. Same thing for Emerald (GBA) not coming out in most markets until after the DS. Black and White 2 (DS) came out in 2012 while the 3DS came out in 2011. Ultra Sun and Moon (3DS) came out 6 months after the Switch.

If Nintendo does allow a major release on a previous generation system, it could be a sign that their current/coming soon (post-Switch) system has robust backwards compatibility.

  • Making unique systems is part of Nintendo’s identity. Xbox and PlayStation compete on maximizing specs and slowly evolving features (though even they throw in one or two gimmicks per generation). Nintendo competes on creating new experiences that draw in people outside of core gamers. The Wii was about using motion controls to draw in people who don’t want to waggle a joystick. The WiiU was about asymmetrical user experience. The Switch (like the GameCube) is about bringing the games to social situations (the opposite of other systems emphasis on online gaming).

Overall, as someone who is not a hardcore gamer, I love the Nintendo philosophy. It encourages developers to experiment with the hardware and create novel interactive experiences.

I am not saying that you are wrong for wanting a more powerful system, but I would be disappointed with a Nintendo system that does not have a big gimmick.
