  • '“All right,” said Susan. “I’m not stupid. You’re saying humans need… fantasies to make life bearable.”

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

    “Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—”

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

“So we can believe the big ones?”

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

“They’re not the same at all!”

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME…SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

“Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what’s the point—”

    MY POINT EXACTLY.

    -Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

  • As a biological determinist, I am positive that most females do not play RPGs because of a difference in brain function. They can play as well as males, but they do not achieve the same sense of satisfaction from playing.

In short, there is no special game that will attract females—other than LARPing, which is more csocialization and theatrics and gaming—and it is a waste of time and effort to attempt such a thing.

That’s a quote of his from 2006. So, I guess he ‘eased off’ in the sense that he decided ‘females could play as well as males’, but it’s pretty clear he was still a sexist ass until the day he died.

Edit: also, anyone know what the heck he had against LARPers?

That depends on what you mean.

Did a giraffe stretch its neck longer and longer, and then pass that long-necked gene onto its kids? No.

Can an embryo that gets a random mutation while developing in the egg/womb pass it on to their children? Yes.

This gets a bit more complicated if you really dig into it, though. Environment does change the expression of genes, and that particular sequence of genes that have been activated/shut-off/whatever can be passed on to children too.

Hence why children who were born to two shorter parents will often grow much taller than them if given much better nutrition. Or why obesity often shows up chronically in families that were poor or had limited access to healthier foods in other ways; their bodies had adapted to grab and store every extra calorie they could to guard against starvation, and unfortunately shutting that gene expression off naturally takes multiple generations.

  • The reason birds are going extinct is humans. Hunting, habitat loss, and climate change are far, far more impactful than cats. As much as they kill, cats shouldn’t even be making a dent in bird populations in most of the world (yes, there are islands and a few microbiomes where they have an outsized impact, and that is an issue that needs to be addressed).

Cats only have such a big impact because we drove those species of birds to the edge of extinction already.

What if my bones were in a museum Where aliens paid good money to see ‘em And suppose that they put me together all wrong Sticking bones onto bones where they didn’t belong!

Imagine phalanges, pelvis, and spine Welded to mandibles that once had been mine! With each misassemblage, the error compounded The aliens would draw back in terror, astounded!

Their textbooks would show me in grim illustration The most hideous thing ever seen in creation! The museum would commission a model in plaster Of ME, to be called ‘Evolution’s Disaster’!

And paleontologists there would debate Dozens of theories to help postulate How mankind survived for those thousands of years With teeth-covered arms growing out of his ears!

Oh, I hope that I’m never in such a manner displayed, No matter HOW much to see me the aliens paid.
