Yeah, I’ve been reading Nick Bentley, he’s like been wary of even simple abstracts, let alone a full euro. I’m still gonna cut down overall (not buying new hardware is better than buying harm-reduced hardware) but I’m glad they’re trying to harm-reduce! 👍🏻

I guess I see pandemics as still an unsolved and dangerous issue, although of course not as bad and important as climate change is, so I still have a hard time seeing the difference.

For me, buying new board games is something that’s riddled with climate guilt. It’s one of my own biggest footprint leaks. And this theme, I feel, would remind me everytime I’m playing the game about that. Which I guess is a good thing.
I already have nine co-op games so I’m set for a while*. If peeps in my part of the world need to fill up seats for Daybreak I’d be willing to give it a spin on someone else’s copy. 🫡

*: Actually I kind of needed this thread because I’ve been eyeing Unfathomable today but I guess I don’t need a tenth coop game right now. This is the irony of Daybreak’s theme—it’s meant to inspire the fight against climate change and as such it reminds me to not buy games much more than a plastic pile like Unfathomable can.
Climate change has the same “going through it in real life” trait as Pandemic has.

It’s something most boardgamers really want, it’s something that they can’t buy, and it’s lower impact on the planet than buying a bunch of plastic and cardboard.
There is this game CO2 where everyone is kind of the villain sorta but you’re also supposed to be cooperating. It doesn’t work very well, your idea sounds better.
But the theme is still a li’l weird to me.

Despite this unbridled optimistic view, it’s hard to deny that much of this game could be described as fantasy. The clarity of structures found in the format of a board game in no way parallels the deeply troubled complexity of our world. In fact, Daybreak makes it clear that to accomplish such an arduous task requires the absence of hurdles such as opposing financial incentives and human egoism.

For me these games are kinda upsetting almost, for how frivolous they come across. The “build back civilization easily after the collapse” ones are even worse, though.
I was on a seminar with some scientists who had created and played many sessions of a very realistic sim game of how Switzerland could meet its climate goals. And no group had ever managed to win it. People were unwilling to give up cars and meat and cheese, was one problem. (That’s also why I don’t fully buy the “it’s only the corporation’s fault” line of reasoning.)

I love Carcassonne and play it often but I don’t like putting a bunch of expansions in. I have three versions: South Seas, The Castle (a.k.a. Zamek), and Mists over Carcassonne, I play them separately and that way I think they end neatly and satisfyingly. My last game of Zamek with @smorkin came down to the last tile drawn!

If fedi is like email, and it is similar in many ways, a Lemmy community is like a mailing list. People can send to the list and the threads on the list from different servers. And there can be separate communities about the same topics just as there can be separate mailing lists about the same topics.
But hashtags in email wouldn’t work as a replacement for mailing lists. Hashtags in email can still have some use, within a mailing list or in a specific conversation, but it’s something very different from a mailing list.
On kbin, if people think that “Oh, here is where the posts about cycling will show up” but the magazine is just based around a hashtag, there’s no way for people to participate deliberately. It’s misleading.
Using hashtags as if it were tumblr or twitter is anti-decentralization and drives people into using the biggest instances only. Groups a la gup.pe and Lemmy and Friendica is a solution to that. It’s only a partially decentralized solution, since each group itself is centrally hosted (exactly like mailing lists were), but it’s at least a solution, whereas misusing hashtags that way isn’t.

Hashtags on Fedi can be good for organizing stuff within a single account or instance, or it can be used for other things like trigger specific bots, but they can not (as you know) work like an IRC channel like they did on Twitter.
That’s why I’m not happy about kbin elevating that misfeature and legitimizing its misuse as if it were as robust as the other federated group protocols are. It’s not the end of the world or the worst feature on the planet, I’m not that worked up about it, it’s just not good, is all.

Copyright is artificial scarcity which is ultimately designed for publishers, not workers.
One of the many, many bugs in market capitalism is that it can’t handle when something is difficult to initially create but when copies are cheap. Like a song. It’s tricky to write it but once you have it you can copy it endlessly. Markets based on supply and demand can’t handle that so they cooked up copyright as kind of a brutal patch, originally for book publishers in an era where normal readers couldn’t easily copy books anyway, only other publishers could.
It’s a patch that doesn’t work very well since many artist still work super hard and still have to get by on scraps. Ultimately we need to re-think a lot of economics. Not only because digital threw everything on its ear and what could’ve been a cornucopia is now a tug of war for pennies, but also because of climate change (which is caused by fossil fuel transaction externalities being under-accounted for—if I sell you a can of gas, the full environmental impact of that is not going to be factored in properly. Sort of like how a memory leak works in a computer program).
I definitively sympathize with your artist friends and I’ve been speaking out against AI art, at least some aspects of it (including, but not limited to, the environmental impact of new models, and the increasing wealth&power concentration for big data capital).
The copyright argument is a bad argument against AI art. But there are also good arguments against it.
I think this is spot on and I overall dislike the game. One thing that I am a li’l bit interested in is the hitpoints system which seems like a good mix of Fate stressboxes with D&D damage.
The amount of incoming damage can go to certain thresholds and that has different consequences (both symbol-layer mechanical and diegetic). I think that’s neat and I’m glad to see that experiment carried further.
Wow, I had missed that. That’s not good. I mean, CR gets criticized for their “shopping episodes” (even though my own group is even more extreme in that regard) so maybe that’s to address that? Diaspora, for example, just has a “recourses” roll instead of detailed accounting of space credits, and it seems to work well in the context of that game.
I don’t think that’s a fair characterization; range bands is trued and tested tech. Cartesian spatialization is overkill for most game groups.
