  • My thing is that there’s a minimum price for fairness, and then there’s products that present themselves as being marked up for fairness that don’t actually benefit the people a fair price should benefit. Your best bet is to do some research into what the minimum fair price something is, and then look for something that price from a local economy.

Unfortunately, this is next to impossible. The systems in place favor us never knowing where anything comes from, and the research tools we used to be able to use to find fair prices (internet search) have been broken for this purpose for nearly 10 years (not just AI bullshit, but all those SEO pay to play bullshit listicles that even infect real human driven testing processes like The Wirecutter and Gear Lab). I think there’s even an argument to be made that AI is an intentional device to steer us into a digital dark age where finding real trustworthy information is nearly impossible.

  • So. Individual pricacy measures are a lot like eating a vegan diet. There’s only so much any one individual can do. You are making things better in some small way by doing it, but once you’ve taken things as far as you, its time to switch from an individual journey to one of collectivization. Advocate to your friends and family about why you browse the internet weird and what we all stand to gain by banding together and doing it as a group. Not all of them will listen, but that’s okay. Evangelism isn’t about reaching everyone, its about reaching a few people. Movements are built by people trying to make them world better and you can do this.

Importantly, too, accepting that there’s only so much you can do will help you confront your anxiety. Anxiety is the emotion we feel when we wish we felt a different feeling from what we’re feeling. Its a uniquely insidious emotion in how when you feel anxious, you want to feel another way, and then you feed the anxiety by doing that. Breaking free of these loops are important if you want to make them world a better place because you need to be able to function and not be broken by your desire to improve things.

And hey. I believe in you. You can do this

  • Having read all the context and the “debunking,” no, I don’t think that person is delusional. I think they’re just more sensative to how certain patterns of actions can be hurtful to marginalized groups than awesomekling is, and that awesomekling has showed a consistent pattern of associating with, and empowering, bad folks, and for not taking it seriously when people say “associating with bad folks makes the project less inclusive, and makes people less willing to contribute.” The justification he provides basically boils down to “Well you don’t contribute so I don’t have to listen to” when part of why people aren’t contributing is that they make first contributions and he offhandedly dismisses them. It’s interesting to me that “trans people exist” is a political agenda but “we refuse to acknowlege your pronouns and will change them with moderator powers on our discord” isn’t.

I disagree that people trying to make the language of technology more inclusive are doing nothing but causing trouble. They’re trying to make our communities more open to more contributors, and by slamming the doors in their faces we prevent them from continuing forward. And here’s the thing: I’ve seen this play out before. Really big, really successful, projects see consistent long term contributions and develop and grow over time. Projects that are harmful to marginalized groups get niche appeal but not mass adoption. Also whether or not he supports right-wing politics, I find it hard to take it seriously that someone who’s so “wholesome” is “just” a misogynist or a transphobe. Those are serious allegations, and ones that I haven’t seen well addressed, and ones I don’t care to associate myself with until awesomekling shows up and puts in the work to make it clear marginalized people are welcome working on his codebase. As of right now? It seems he’s perfectly willing to accept money and code from people who show consistent patterns of abuse.

As a left-aligned person, myself, I ALSO think we need to stop excusing hate, but I think that looks somewhat different.
