  • The elderberries are finally starting to ripen and the beautyberries are starting to fruit. The box huckleberry seems to be very happy this year, I dunno why though. The maypops and creeping cucumbers have finally come out, late as they usually do, and are climbing everything. Unfortunately so are the invasive morning glories that I have to keep rescuing everything else from. The young pricklyash is finally starting to look more like a tree than a rose bush. The ostrich and maidenhair ferns are having their second terrible year in a row, not sure what’s going on there. Mayapples are very nearly ripe. Finally, the neighbor and landlord have murdered an even greater chunk of the garden. Nearly a third dead to poison…

Definitely both, since a lot of people (myself included) don’t have anything resembling a good local landtrust. Evety tiny bit of park/public land/etc near me is like 99% amur honeysuckle, garlic mustard, and lesser celendine. None of the people ostensibly responsible for taking care of said land seem to care… 😭

Why are people afraid of house centipedes? They already ARE cute! It’d be one thing if they were at least somewhat willing to bite you, like some spiders, but they won’t. They’ve got the best eyesight of any centipede, which inadvertently gives them really cute little eyes too.

Super super tasty, 10/10, would recommend! Starburst is pretty accurate. Also a lot of people debate over whether the seeds will actually hurt you or not, but plenty of people have eaten them and been fine. That’s up to your level of risk aversion. I try to keep the seeds for planting even though they’re rarely viable.

While there are plenty where I live, most natural areas here are so ridiculously overrun with invasives that I try to leave the native stuff alone. Plus the squirrels always beat you to the ripe Mayapples anyway lol. They’re very easy to grow from root though, so I just get mine from the garden.
