A well deserved rtfm
Why do people feel the need to split hairs with these terms?
He’s not splitting hairs. It’s just a different value proposition. I don’t like the phone number requirement either but it makes sense to your average normie who realizes SMS is exposed plaintext. Something like an anonymous seed phrase as the key to your account would confuse most people. Email would be an improvement but it’s at best pseudonymous.
I agree. I refuse to watch ads or to pay for an experience that offers less than a fraction of what Newpipe offers. When Newpipe is no longer viable I’ll repurpose that time to chipping away at my reading list.
I know how VPNs work. When I connect to a VPN I trust that the provider doesn’t snoop on me, actually routes the traffic like they promise and combines my traffic effectively enough that it obfuscates my identity.
You also have to trust your vpns isp.
For “privacy” yes, almost entirely.
If your VPN isn’t routing to your home network so you can safely access selfhosted applications then you’re basically just sharing your traffic with a total stranger and trusting them not to run telemetry etc.
Self-hosting was always the intent. Open source ended up being a bonus. People 30 years ago wouldn’t understand why something like facebook would even need to exist. The internet is designed so literally everyone can have their own website.
It’s not outdated. The chance of a newer electronic communication method being ubiquitous and also relatively open (e.g. not associated directly with a company) is slim. PGP encryption (another “old” technology) solves the privacy nightmare piece. People just have to use it.
Also I recommend selfhosting email. Mailinabox.email is pretty brainless.
The scummy sales person is a stereotype. They exist sure but if you’ve ever worked with a good one they can really help particularly if you’re buying something complex. I used to work for a company that sold complex manufacturing equipment and without a salesperson theres no way most customers would know what they needed to maintain it etc.
This is the stupid simple and stable solution. Nextcloud was always giving me grief but Radicale is rock solid
Call or visit them in person.
Anyone using these services in current year is asking for this. If someone is not computer literate and “has” to use these unnecessary services because they can’t selfhost or whatever they need to recognize that total exploitation of their data is the cost and it will never, ever change unless you own your data on your own hardware.
I can’t reiterate enough how much the government will never ever solve this problem.
I really love Podverse but ended up going back to Pocketcasts for the Android Auto support. They have a bounty out for the feature. I’ll switch back if they ever get it.
I’ve used the aforementioned applications for years and have never had issues finding relevant content. I get recommendations from friends, related videos and blogs etc
I think libretube has that.
Try libretube. It’s more UX-y. I personally like the simplicity of Newpipe but I can get why it’s not for everyone.
This is where I differ. I think the algos and video recommendations are manipulative. I simply watch whatever is new from my subscribed channels and occasionally something from the related video section. Even if cared about recommendations there is no way I would value it more than the other benefits.
All that being said check out Libretube. I think it has the recommendations on the homepage.
Forgive me if you already know this but VPNs are just someone else’s computer. It’s good for preventing your ISP from snooping but you give that visibility to whoever operates the VPN so you’re definitely trusting them not to be malicious.
I use Newpipe on an Nvidia shield in my living room.
The Patriot Act was an overwhelmingly bipartisan bill.
