Fair enough, I wasn’t really suggesting it as long term ownership, more throwaway that could be deleted afterwards but I guess it makes sense if you’re not using javascript that that can’t possibly work.

You could try making an account there and DM the admin directly, I think they have open signups, part of the reason they’re such a spam infested hellhole.

Hang on no, Blahaj.zone isn’t a Mastodon it’s Hajkey (or Iceshrimp) which is very different from Mastodon despite being a Microblog service similar in function.

I’m able to access it now, but it seems really broken and new content from outside isn’t federating in (except from users who were already followed by someone before).

Unless Hexbear was defederated by everyone as a whole, or squashed out of existence I don’t feel like discussions about it are going to stop any time soon, which kind of sucks because they do get annoying, but I do know they are important since those things haven’t happened and hexbear is still out there causing problems, it’s important for people to be aware of it, especially when picking instances.

I agree, even if someone is a horrible person gender identity isn’t something that should ever undermined or invalidated. Gender identity and sexuality are things you don’t try to undermine or make fun of, no matter how awful of a person they are, because it sets a precedent for justifying that awful practice.

If we want gender identity to be seen as valid, it should be seen as unacceptable in all cases to invalidate it.

Hexbear users are assholes, and some of them may even push for things harmful to trans and gender-diverse people, but they still are the gender they identify as, and that should be acknowledged and respected, even if you don’t respect them as a person and/or they aren’t respectable because disrespecting gender identity indirectly hurts many other people, not just them.

That’s good to hear, hopefully all the issues are fixed and we’ll (all instances who’ve been holding out on 0.18.5) be able to upgrade to 0.19.2 in the near future

I don’t really think that’s a great idea, I think local-only posts are a better idea, there are reasons someone from another instance might want to post on the meta instance, such as a problem related to the instance. It’s better to have posts be marked as local only and not federate out but still have the Town Square open and public, so to speak.

I feel like it would still create drama, I mean it’s not like the only people opposed to it were users outside here, plus it’s not like people couldn’t re-post it elsewhere as news since it’s all public anyway, regardless of federation.

Defederation is an unpleasant topic and it’s bound to cause unpleasantness, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it though, or that we should not give notice or announcements when it happens, it just means that we have to consider and account for the fact that it will come with drama, and to deal with that drama when it arises.

Though I do wish we could make certain posts local-only. I would definitely use that feature when posting, as it’s quite useful when you have things you want to share with and get feedback from the instance but not necessarily the whole fediverse.

I think the point is to be informative, also it is important to realize how it affects people which many of the people providing feedback showed. I’m not a believer that Fediverse should cater to “user choice” or “free speech” and I do believe defederation is justified and necessary, but sometimes it is too much, or too early to properly tell.

I can definitely see how it would be unpleasant to have a countdown thread pinned in the feed though, and the announcement of defederation in general. Defederation is an unpleasant subject and does start drama, though I feel it would be just as bad if not worse if we didn’t get a warning or announcement. So it is necessary to talk about it and understand how it impacts people, especially with bigger and well established instances.

(I wouldn’t say this is necessary for an instance that is new or has never contacted us or vice versa, in that case us defederating them would be as if we never existed to them, this argument about considering impact doesn’t apply to threads or any other instance which hasn’t gotten off the ground).

Personally I wasn’t a fan of seeing the post pinned in my community (especially after lurking on Reddit and seeing a troll post claiming that Snowe needs to hand over Programming.dev to hexbear, made it seem like we were trollbaited) but I’d still prefer it to not noticing anything for months until I inevitably tried to respond or search for something there and couldn’t find it, or replied/posted in their communities and get no response. Even though it’s unpleasant I’d still take notice over ignorance.

I see. That’s still cool, would be nice to have more options for the forum interface than just lemmy and Kbin, I know technically the fork is still Lemmy but it could have more features than the original version has, ones that the Lemmy Devs won’t implement.

Doesn’t Lemmy 0.19 still have severe Federation issues, I don’t think it would be super wise to upgrade to 19 until those are fixed.

I think a bigger problem is that like Reddit or Facebook Lemmy.world lets these people continue to post and participate there, most only get temporary bans, I distinctly remember a person who used the R-slur multiple times and was blatantly transphobic, yet last I checked he only got temp banned, and otherwise are completely welcome back even after such atrocious behavior.

One user I can refer to is Mojave, but he certainly isn’t the only case, there are plenty more like him. I remember he had quite the abusive spree in !egg_irl@lemmy.blahaj.zone, if memory serves he made quite a few transphobic attacks, unfortunately it doesn’t show up in the modlog because they purged him rather than removing (he also apparently had some very bad behavior in !transfem@lemmy.blahaj.zone but I’m not there and don’t remember it).
