Signal would be the best choice, imho. Next best would be SimpleX for android or iOS. The desktop version is currently not great.

They can’t scan chats that don’t exist. Time to make a switch, folks!
Another vote for Mullvad, here. It’s arguably one of the best VPNs out there and at 5 bucks a month, you really can’t go wrong. If you want cheaper than that, you have bigger problems than a VPN.
I found this and actually like it better than Alpaca. Your mileage may vary, but they claim that it’s 100% private, no internet necessary:
I’m sorry you feel that way. I’m afraid I disagree, but I respect your opinion.
To be fair, Matrix has been around a lot longer than Revolt. I remember the early days with Riot - and it was absolutely horrendous. Give Revolt some time, and I think it will improve quite a bit.
Maybe this will help?
SimpleX is great, but it needs to mature a little in regards to usability. The desktop app is abysmally slow, and the amount of memory it uses really needs to be trimmed down. If they manage to streamline these two things, I could see SimpleX becoming quite popular. I’m definitely keeping an eye on it.
