Destructive testing has always been part of every engineering development projects.

When developing new parts it’s common to make a lot of test parts and stress them to failure to see how they react.

For innovative design it can take several iterations before finding the right material/design. Each destructive testing is bringing valuable information.

Knowing exactly how a part will fail gives extremely valuable information on how to build a part that will NOT fail and everyone does that including NASA.

SpaceX has just brought this philosophy to whole different level by doing destructive testing on the whole rocket. The best example is that on the last flight they purposefully removed heatshields on some area of the Starship and added sensors in the area to see how it would impact the ship.

The can afford to do that because they focused on building a rocket factory to mass produce starships rather than building a rocket. It means that even if they were not launching it the factory would still produce Starships.

PS: SLS is not 10x the cost of Starship. According to an independent report ( source ) Right now the estimated cost of a Starship launch is estimated around $90 million, one the program is operational the cost of a Starship launch is estimated to be around $10 millions.

A SLS launch is estimated to be around $4.1 billion

So a Starship launch is 40 to 400 time cheaper than a SLS launch

I would not have believed it in a Sci-Fi movie. Having the heatshield failed on the flap for most of the descent, seing the flap burning in flame and still managing to land softly after that !

You can do that on the Prusa. The firmware let you cancel a part mid print but continue the rest.

Desalination plants also requires a lot of energy, which is another ressource that carribean islands are struggling with.

If we compare Ford to BYD for example.

In 2023 Ford sold around 2 millions cars and BYD around 3 millions.

For Ford only 72 608 cars out of these 2 millions were EV (3.6%) For BYD it’s was almost 1.6 million EV (53.3%)

In 2023 Ford got $9.2 billions from the US government to produce EV, so around $126 000 per EV sold in 2023.

$126 000*1 600 000 = $2 trillions ! So unless BYD received more than $2 trillions dollars from the Chinese government in 2023 it means that each EV sold by Ford is more subsidized than an EV sold by BYD.

This is not an analysis, I took huge shortcuts in this comment and might have done mistakes in the calculations.

The argument of China subsidizing EV is always coming back but I would be curious to know the comparison with the US.

The US are subsidizing EV too I would not be surprised if the amount of subsidy per EV produced is much higher for US manufacturers than China.

Always use the right tool to remove a tick.

If you use tweezers or rubbing alcohol you will make the tick spit the blood back in your sister with all the pathogens with it, this is what causes diseases.

With the right tool the tick is very easily removed with a very low risk of infection.

In France I’m buying from ArianePlast. It’s good PLA for a decent price.

I have not tried it but they also have “Eco” PLA at 13€/kg

So unfortunately removing religion from the scouting would remove one of the core principle of the movement, I don’t think it would anytime soon.

Which is a shame because I really enjoyed my time scouting, I think it was a great balance of fun, education and learning responsibilities. But the religion aspect of it make me seriously reconsider to send my kids to do it or not.
