It’s because we allow property and the homes that sit on it to be a speculative market. We encourage it. The only way for property values to be high, well, it’s a supply and demand thing. If you glut the market with anything, you drive prices down. And people whose entire retirement is built on that won’t be having it, let alone the conglomerate owners…

Yeah I hate to say it, but I worked in HIV prevention in the late 2000s, and we really thought prep was going to be the end of HIV, along with rigorous testing and linkage to care.

Since then, HIV rates have exploded in many areas, silently, because we’ve gone fully regressive on sex ed.

I have friends that became HIV positive before they even knew about prep.

The helicopters were a big point in the book, InGen branded helicopters whisking people around. Even back in the 80s/90s, helicopters were mad expensive but they focused on them because they’re visible and cool.

My elderly neighbor doesn’t exactly follow rules. She had a colonoscopy earlier this year. They sent her home because she “wasn’t clean.” She had to repeat the process later, and I can’t imagine she was a Sunny Country Road, but they at least completed the exam that time. I am still mortified for her, my first colonoscopy was last year, I spent a full day on the toilet prepping. Nearly slept in the bathtub.

My boss just lies. My predecessor DID have open heart surgery, and retired so he could have a heart replacement, so he missed a lot of time. They used to have a “sick time bank” but turned it off and enabled rollover instead. So my boss apparently just told everyone he was in his office for 6 weeks while he was hospitalized. Nice, but shouldn’t have to risk your own career and retirement to be human.

They’ve gone back and forth. I think if you large-picture it, it’s pretty OK, something like 15% of bird and bat diets come from mosquitos. But at the micro level, some species may not cope. I am very fond of bats so I am ambivalent about this.
