Having just looked it up, this painting is probably too late (was done after proper measuring was implemented), but still made me think of this piece of research I saw referenced in a documentary about Venice (I think it was Saving Venice) where they make use of the near-photographic paintings to asses the changing water levels.
Absolutely stunning. This view is from the “Accademia” bridge in Venice, and in the background you can see the “Saint Mary of Health” church, which is right before the “Punta della Dogana” (the old customs buildings). It still looks exactly the same as it looked in this painting (minus all those beautiful boats, sadly).
I’ve only been to Venice once as a kid but it’s unlike anywhere else on earth. I really like the glow and the accuracy of colours here :)

When I first opened the image I only saw the top part of it. I needed to double check if it wasn’t a photograph. That’s a really nice painting.
