Hillforts and Oppida are large structures dating to the Bronze and Iron Ages that performed a variety of defensive, cultural, and ritualistic functions.

I visited Dún Aonghasa, a hillfort in Ireland build high on a cliff above the ocean, a few years ago. It was absolutely formidable. I can’t imagine how impressive it would have been back in the time it was in use.
